Mechanical Engineering - Overview
It is one of the oldest and basic branches of engineering. It encompasses three major disciplines
- Thermal engineering: covering I.C. engines, thermal and hydro turbines, refrigeration and air-conditioning, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), lubrication or tribology etc..
- Design: covering machine elements like springs, gears, bearings, couplings etc., computer aided design with tools like ANSYS, NASTRAN,.. based on Finite Element Method (FEM), crash analysis
- Production: covering Operations research, Industrial engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) using CNC work stations In addition, it covers inter-disciplinary subjects like power plant engineering, automobile engineering.
Students need to have sound basics in physics and good knowledge of mathematics.
Employment potential exists in thermal and hydro power stations, automobile companies and all heavy engineering industries. Openings are also available in ever challenging and expanding fields like aerospace engineering, nanotechnology, bio-engineering etc.. , particularly for those with strong base in areas like FEM, CFD and CIM.
